Hungary, Balkan Peninsula. Variable in leaf lobing and involucre, and divided by Zohary (op. cit. 12), on the basis of this variation into 3 varieties - var. pallida (involucre more than ½ as long as the calyx, leaves ± unlobed), var. phrygia Zoh. (involucre more than ½ as long as calyx, leaves 5-7-lobed) and var. microchiton (Alef.) Zoh. (with involucre c.½ as long as the calyx). These three varieties show considerable intergradation.
