P. orientale L., Sp. Pl. 508 (1753). Ic. Bot. Mag., 2: t. 57 (1794). Figure 8, p. 223.   Stems erect, sub-spreading setose below, adpressed-setose above, 60-90 cm. Leaves distributed along the stem at 3-6 nodes, pinnatisect, the segments oblong- triangular, somewhat toothed. Buds ovoid to broadly ovoid, 2-3 cm. Petals 4, 4.5-9 cm, scarlet, immaculate, or with a blotch broader than long at the base. Filaments dilated. Capsule subglobose, 2-3 cm broad. Disc flat, stigmas 7-16. Two varieties may be recognised: 1. Leaves at 3-6 nodes; petals 7-9 cm, maculate; stigmas 10-16 var. orientale 1. Leaves at 3-4 nodes; petals 4.5-6 cm, immaculate; stigmas 7-13 var. parviflora var. orientale. Fl. 7.
