Mediterranean area. Medit. element. This species was divided by Sebastian (1956) into two subspecies, subsp. latifolia, with broader leaves with round or cordate base, and subsp. orientalis Sébst. with narrower leaves with a cuneate base. It is not possible to divide the Turkish material on these characters because the leaves of P. latifolia are dimorphic. The juvenile leaves are ovate-cordate to ovate-lanceolate with a cordate base, whereas adult leaves are always lanceolate-elliptic with a cuneate base. According to Fl. Europaea 3:55 (1972), P. media L. (to which many Turkish records have been referred) is the adult leaf-stage of P. latifolia L. The W. & C. Mediterranean Phillyrea angustifolia L. differs from P. latifolia by its linear to lanceolate leaves with 4-6 pairs of obscure veins.
