Scattered throughout the southern parts of the species' range in Europe and in Syria and Lebanon. Medit. element. By far the commoner variety in Turkey, with a wide range in leaf shape, even on the same tree. Some speci-mens from S. Anatolia (e.g. C5 Adana: Karsanti, 900 m, Yurdakulol ISTO 17666! C6 Hatay: Antakya, Seldiren forest, 1050 m, Göçmen-Adir ISTO 6697!) closely approach the following variety.
The typification of Q. cerris requires further investigation. The original description, protologue (Bauhin) and locality "Hab. in Hispania" (where the species is absent) do not fully agree with Q. cerris. However, the specimen in Hb. Linn. (1128/33) is typical of the plant usually accepted as Q. cerris var. cerris.
