S. France (naturalized), Italy to Cyprus and W. Syria; California. The disjunction of 5. officinalis between the E. Mediterranean and Pacific N. America is remarkable; the infraspecific variation within the two distributional areas is somewhat different. An account of this species' phytosociology, anatomy, properties etc. will be found in S. Oflas (op. cit.). A record from the Pontus (attributed in the Pflanzenreich (op. cit.) to C.Koch) is wrong, being based on Thirke's collection from Bursa.
