Densely caespitose, subscapigerous perennial, 10-30 cm; rootstock thick, cylindrical, crowned by persistent leaf bases. Leaves entire, 5-10 x 0.1-0.2 cm, linear, ± pubescent, base amplexicaul. Capitula 1 per stem, 12-20 mm long. Inner phyllaries 10-15 mm; outer 2-5 mm, lanceolate. Flowers pale yellow. Achenes c. 7 x 1 mm, cylindrical, ridged; pappus yellow, hairs entirely barbellate. Fl. 6-8. Limestone crevices and ledges, 1700-3700 m.

N.W. Iran, Georgia, Soviet Armenia, Lebanon. Ir.-Tur. element. Glabrous forms (such as the plants from Berit Da. and Cilo Tepe) are referable to var. glabrescens Boiss. (the plant from Berit Da. is the type). Whereas the type specimen of S. multiceps at J E clearly has fibrous, almost woolly leaf remains at the base of the stem, that at WU does not; the latter specimen matches typical S. rigida.
