Cyprus, Lebanon, Palestine, Arabia, Syrian Desert, Iran. A widespread and variable species. Var. kurdica is intermediate (and probably a hybrid) between var. azurea and A. strigosa, having the leaf texture of the former but the calyxlobes of the latter. Specimens from C8 Siirt (13 km from Siirt to.Kurtalan, 850 m, D. 43130!) and C9 Mardin (S. foot of Cudi Da., 500-700 m, D. 42756!) with the calyx of A. strigosa but otherwise with the characteristics of A. azurea S.I., may also have a hybrid origin.
