Usually small perennial herbs. Stems erect, usually glabrous, up to 30 cm, but often less than 10 cm. Basal leaves glabrous to pilose, long-petiolate, with 0-1 pairs of lateral leaflets, and a larger ovate-orbicular, usually toothed, terminal leaflet. Stem leaves oblong-amplexicaul, toothed, overlapping. Petals yellow, (5-)6-8 mm. Siliquae erect-spreading, compressed, not more than 1 mm broad. 3 intergrading varieties are recognisable in Turkey:
1. Lower leaves densely to sparsely pubescent  var. eriopoda
1. Lower leaves glabrous
  2. Plants delicate, up to 16 cm tall  var. minor
  2. Plants robust, 22-30 cm tall  var. robusta
