A. amplexicaule (Willd.) Hand.-Mazz. in Ann. Nat. Hofmus. Wien 27:431 (1913).
Glabrous perennial, rarely hairy at base or on leaves. Stems (20-)40-60(-70) cm, ± densely leafy, simple, erect, slightly sulcate. Lower cauline leaves petiolate; middle cauline largest, petiolate or sessile-amplexicaul, ovate with cordate base to broadly lanceolate, acute, serrate or rarely biserrate. Inflorescence lax in lower part, ± branched, in upper part a ± dense spike. Flowers in dense clusters of 10-20, erect. Pedicels filiform, 1-3 mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes subulate, glabrous, erect, 1-2 x 0.3-0.45 mm. Corolla lobes glabrous, 8-12 x 0.8-1.2 mm. Stigmas (2-)3(-4). Capsule ovoid-ellipsoid, 3-4 x 3.5-5 mm, opening by 3 pores slightly above middle. Seeds ellipsoid, ± flattened, 2 x 1 mm, light brown, shiny. 2/7 = 34.
1. Lower and middle cauline leaves petiolate, Slightly dentate to entire, often with cuneate base subsp. aucheri
1. Only lower cauline leaves petiolate, others sessile, ± amplexicaul usually sharply serrate, with cordate or cuneate base subsp. amplexicaule

N. & W. Iran, N. Iraq, Caucasia. Ir.-Tur. element. A. amplexicaule is very polymorphic in vegetative characters, especially in the form of the cauline leaves. Closely related to the A. argutum group in C. Asia and A. fi/ipes from S.E. Anatolia and N. Iraq. All these species resemble in habit some Phyteuma species from C. Europe, but differ in chromosome number (when known), floral morphology and seeds.
