W. & C. Europe,Crimea,S. Russia, Mediterranean area, Caucasia,Turkestan, Transcaspia, N. Iraq, N. & N.W. Iran. A variable species, especially in size, shape and colour of labellum. Plants from the Near East with dense spikes and smaller flowers with an obscurely 3-lobed to entire labellum have been described as O. laxiflora Lam. subsp. dielsiana Soó (loc. cit., as 'dielsianus'). The occurrence of O. elegans Heuffel (loc. cit., with broader, ± unfolded leaves and larger undivided labellum) is also mentioned in literature for Turkey.
The rich populations growing in wet meadows in C. Anatolia often comprise thousands of plants with a variety of labellum forms. It is hardly possible to select individuals out of this diversity which have characters which are constant to any extent and which might justify a formal taxonomic treatment. Cf. Buttler & Nieschalk, op. cit. (1979).
