Europe eastwards through S.W. Asia to C. Asia and N.W. Himalayas. Euro-Sib. element. A wide view of A. villosa is taken in this account as nothing is to be gained by' attempting formal classification on the basis of investigations over a comparatively small part of its immense range. An account of its variation in Anatolia is given by Lamond in Notes R.B.G. Edinb.36:1-2 (1978).Tchihatcheff's record of A. carnea L. (Asie Min. Bot. 3( 1):471, 1860) from the summit of Bithynian Olympus (Ulu Da.) must be referred to A. villosa.
